Why it's worth doing right
A culvert that's too small, set too high, or crushed will back water up into the yard or across the driveway, and eventually wash out the gravel. Doing it right means:
- The right size pipe for the ditch and how much water it carries.
- Set at the right grade so water flows through instead of sitting in the pipe.
- Solid backfill and cover so the pipe doesn't crush under trucks.
- Permits handled correctly: a driveway onto a state-maintained road needs an NCDOT driveway permit, and NCDOT sets the pipe size. We'll tell you what applies before we start.

Do I need a permit for a driveway culvert?
If your driveway connects to a state-maintained road, NCDOT requires a driveway permit and decides the culvert size. Some private and county roads have their own rules. We'll tell you what applies to your road.
Can you replace an old culvert under my existing driveway?
Yes. We dig out the old pipe, set new pipe, backfill and compact, and rebuild the gravel on top.
My driveway floods when it rains. Is it the culvert?
Often, yes. It's usually a clogged or crushed pipe, or one set too high. We'll look at it and tell you what's wrong.
Do you build the driveway too?
Yes. Gravel driveways and parking areas are our main work, so one crew handles the culvert and the driveway together.
